Nominated for 11 Academy Awards, “Sergeant York” is a biographical film about the life of Alvin York, one of the most-decorated American soldiers of World War I. The film will be preceded by a short introductory video comparing Camp Sherman to Camp Gordon, Georgia where Sergeant York trained. It will also provide background on the real Sergeant York and his life.
Gary Cooper went on to win the Academy Award for “Best Actor” for his portrayal of York. The film also won for “Best Film Editing” and was nominated in nine other categories, including “Best Picture”, “Director”, “Supporting Actor”, and “Supporting Actress”. It was directed by Howard Hawks and was the highest-grossing film of the year following its date of release. Relax and enjoy this classic in the historic Majestic Theater where it was first shown.
